Aquaponics is the only farming system that produces both protein and vegetables from one structure. The fish feed the plants through their waste. The plants clean the water for the fish. Nothing is wasted, and the system runs on far less water than either conventional fish ponds or soil-based vegetable growing.
In Nigeria, where catfish is in constant demand and fresh vegetables command premium prices in urban markets, aquaponics makes practical sense. The challenge is understanding how to adapt the system to Nigerian temperature conditions and source the right components locally.
How the system actually works
The setup has three main parts: a fish tank, a biofilter, and one or more grow beds. Water flows from the fish tank through the biofilter and then into the grow beds, where plant roots sit in gravel or expanded clay. The plants absorb nutrients from the water, cleaning it in the process. The cleaned water returns to the fish tank, and the cycle repeats.
The key biological process happens in the biofilter, where beneficial bacteria convert fish waste - specifically ammonia - into nitrates that plants can absorb. Without an established bacterial colony in the biofilter, the ammonia builds up and kills the fish. This is the most important thing to get right and the most common mistake beginners make by rushing the startup process.
Why catfish is the right choice for Nigeria
African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) is the first choice for aquaponics in Nigeria, and not just because it is the most popular fish in Nigerian markets. Catfish tolerates poor water quality far better than tilapia. It survives lower dissolved oxygen levels, handles ammonia spikes that would kill other species, and grows fast - reaching harvest weight of 800g to 1kg in 4 to 6 months at the right feeding rate.
In a Nigerian context, this tolerance matters because power cuts interrupt aeration, and beginners inevitably make water chemistry mistakes during the learning curve. Catfish survives errors that tilapia does not.
Tilapia is a viable second option. It grows slightly slower, tolerates Nigerian water temperatures well, and is easier to breed if you want to produce your own fingerlings. However, catfish commands a stronger price in most Nigerian markets outside the southwest.
Managing Nigerian heat in an aquaponics system
The main environmental challenge for aquaponics in Nigeria is water temperature. Catfish thrives between 24°C and 30°C. In the hot season across most of southern Nigeria, outdoor water temperatures can exceed 32°C, which stresses the fish and reduces their feed conversion rate.
Three things help. First, shade the fish tank. A corrugated iron roof or a shade net cover over the tank alone can reduce water temperature by 4 to 6°C compared to a fully exposed tank. Second, place the system on the north or east side of a building where it gets morning light but avoids intense afternoon sun. Third, increase aeration during hot periods because warm water holds less dissolved oxygen.
For the grow beds, heat is less of a problem. Most leafy vegetables grow well in temperatures that would stress the fish. Kale, lettuce, scent leaf, and ugwu all perform reliably in Nigerian aquaponics grow beds year-round.

The startup process: cycling the system first
The single most important step that beginners skip is cycling the system before adding fish. Cycling means establishing the bacterial colony in your biofilter that converts ammonia to nitrates. Without it, ammonia from the fish waste builds up to toxic levels within days and the fish die.
Best plants for Nigerian aquaponics
Not all plants perform equally in aquaponics. Heavy fruiting crops like tomatoes and peppers require high phosphorus levels that a fish-only nutrient source may not supply adequately without supplementation. Start with these proven performers:
🥬 Kale and ugwu
Fast-growing, high demand in Nigerian markets. Kale is the top performer in most Nigerian aquaponics systems.
🌿 Scent leaf (efinrin)
Extremely popular in Nigerian cooking. Grows vigorously in warm aquaponics water. High value per kilogram.

What to expect from a 1,000-litre home system
A properly managed 1,000-litre catfish system stocked at 100 fingerlings produces 60 to 80 kg of harvestable catfish over a 5-month grow-out cycle. At 2026 Enugu market prices of ₦2,500 to ₦3,500 per kg for live catfish, that is ₦150,000 to ₦280,000 in fish income per cycle.
The two grow beds running alongside produce continuous weekly harvests of leafy vegetables. A conservative estimate of 3 to 5 kg of mixed greens per week at ₦800 to ₦1,500 per kg adds ₦9,600 to ₦30,000 per month in vegetable income on top of the fish revenue.
Feed costs for catfish run approximately ₦35,000 to ₦50,000 per grow-out cycle for a 100-fish system. Electricity for the pump and aeration adds another ₦8,000 to ₦15,000, depending on your power situation and whether you run a generator or inverter backup.
The three mistakes that kill most first systems
Not cycling the system before adding fish. Covered above. This is responsible for the majority of first-system failures. Give the bacterial colony time to establish before you stock the fish.
Overstocking the fish tank. More fish, seems like more income, but an overstocked tank produces more ammonia than the biofilter can process. Ammonia and nitrite spike, stress sets in, and the fish stop feeding or die. Start at half the theoretical stocking density and increase slowly over successive cycles.
No backup aeration during power cuts. Fish in a densely stocked aquaponics tank can suffocate within 2 to 3 hours without aeration. A 12V battery-powered air pump that switches on automatically when the main power fails costs under ₦8,000 and is non-negotiable in Nigeria.
